Saxum: A Project in the Holy Land

"To go on pilgrimage to the Holy Land is to kneel in the Grotto of Bethlehem, hear Jesus's calling next to the Sea of Galilee, kiss the earth of Calvary and pray in the empty Sepulchre".

Saxum, a project inspired by Saint Josemaria Escriva, aims to turn a visit to the Holy Land into a life-changing experience. Through a conference centre and multimedia resource centre it will offer people from all all over the world a place where they can obtain the spiritual support, instruction and resources to enter more deeply into the Gospels and gain a better understanding of the history of Israel.

The Project

Research and planning into the project began as long ago as 1994.  Land was acquired in 2005 and building began in 2013. It is intended that programmes will commence in 2016.

Located 15km from Jerusalem, along the road to Emmaus, Saxum will offer a:

Conference Centre for retreats, workshops and conferences with chapels, guest rooms, common areas and a dining area.

Hospitality Centre for the training and professional development of young women in hospitality skills.

Multimedia Resource Centre, open to the general public and utilizing cutting edge technologies. It will provide information for tour guides and visitors to the Holy Land and explore the Jewish roots and highlights of the Christian Faith. It will also offer a chapel and audtorium.

Spiritual Assistance for those visiting Saxum will be provided by the The Prelature of Opus Dei. Saxum will also work with Polis - The Jerusalem Institute for Languages and Humanities - to develop the audio-visual materials of the resource center and courses. In Polis, Christians, Jews, Muslims and Druze work together. This spirit of cooperation permeates all the activities of the Saxum project.
